Symbian Foundation completes the transition to Open Source
|
The Symbian Foundation today completed the open source release of the source code. The Symbian platform, which has been developed over more than 10 years and has shipped in more than 330 million devices around the world, is now completely open and the source code is available for free. The transition of this market-leading platform from proprietary code to open source is the largest in software history. The move has been completed four months ahead of schedule and provides the basis for unlimited mobile development based on innovation and openness.
Any individual or organization can now take, use and modify the code for any purpose, whether that be for a mobile device or for something else entirely. This strategic move provides the Symbian ecosystem with greater potential for innovation, faster time-to-market and the opportunity to develop on the platform for free. Symbian's commitment to openness also includes complete transparency in future plans, including the publication of the platform roadmap and planned features up to and including 2011. Anyone can now influence the roadmap and contribute new features.
Lee Williams, Executive Director of the Symbian Foundation, comments: "The development community is now empowered to shape the future of the mobile industry, and rapid innovation on a global scale will be the result. When the Symbian Foundation was created, we set the target of completing the open source release of the platform by mid-2010 and it's because of the extraordinary commitment and dedication from our staff and our member companies that we’ve reached it well ahead of schedule."
All 108 packages containing the source code of the Symbian platform can now be downloaded from Symbian's developer web site, under the terms of the Eclipse Public License and other open source licenses. Also available for download are the complete development kits for creating applications (the Symbian Developer Kit) and mobile devices (the Product Development Kit). These kits are compatible with Symbian^3, the very latest version of the platform, which is now fully open source and will be "feature complete" during Q1 of this year.

My-Maemo.com (beta) launched!

After several weeks of preparations, we're now ready to launch My-Maemo.com!
Yet another, new Maemo site? Well, not really new, and not really just 'yet another'. It's based on my 10 year experience with running My-Symbian. And it's going to be different than other existing sites, and unique, with its own flavor.
We're not starting with just empty pages. Right now, the site offers you the following content:
* our own Maemo Software Catalog with over 270 applications listed, with screenshots and short descriptions. For now, it's probably the biggest online catalog of Maemo 5 software.
* our own Maemo Downloads where we will be sharing applications which are not currently available in other Fremantle repositories. In the beginning, they will be mainly applications written for previous Maemo releases and devices, not yet ported to Maemo 5, but tested by us and found to be running just fine
* our own Software repository which will contain the same files as in Downloads, just easier to install and maintain via your phone's App Manager

Maemo 5 based Nokia N900 announced
|
Today Nokia has finally officially presented the rumoured Nokia N900. It runs the Linux-based Maemo 5 platform known from Internet Tablets (the 770, N800 and N810), but for the first time the N900 is not just a "tablet" but a fully functional smartphone with GSM radio and HSDPA connectivity (in addition to WiFi b/g, USB 2.0 Highspeed and Bluetooth 2.1 +EDR with A2DP and AVRCP). It is also the most powerful mobile device from Nokia released up to date, including the ARM Cortex-A8 (OMAP3430) processor @ 600 MHz with PowerVR SGX and OpenGL 2.0 (the same as used in the Omnia HD and the iPhone 3G S), 256 MB operating memory (and 768 MB of virtual memory, i.e. 1 GB in total), 32 GB storage memory and microSD card slot, 5 Megapixel (2576 x 1936) Carl Zeiss camera with 848 x 480 pixel / 25 fps video recording, FM transmitter, Assisted GPS receiver (with Nokia Maps), 3D accelerometer, 3.5 mm audio jack and TV Out, and 3.5" 800x480 pixel touch sensitive (resistive) display. The N900 also has a three row hardware QWERTY keyboard and a kick stand. It measures 110.9 x 59.8 x 18 mm and weighs 181 g.
Software features include: Maemo 5 platform, Mozilla powered web browser with Flash 9.4 and Ajax support, customizable "Panorama Desktop", multiwindow task switcher, Nokia Messaging with push and HTML support, Skype client, video playback (H.264, MPEG-4, XviD, WMV, Flash) at 25-30 fps, audio playback (MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, M4A, WAV, WMA), video recording (848 x 480 / 25 fps), and more.
The N900 will be demoed and more details about the device and the Maemo 5 platform will be presented next week at the Nokia World event in Stuttgart. N900 will start shipping in October at €500 before taxes.

New Symbian Signed test criteria - your comments wanted
|
Symbian Foundation have been working on new Symbian Signed test criteria supposed to "guarantee the origin of the application and to ensure that the application is 'well-behaved' when installed onto the device" and they're asking for developers' input.
It's good that something's changing about Symbian Signed. Hopefully, the new criteria will be accompanied by a fix that will finally block the OS hack. Available and not fixed for over a year now, it allows for installing unsigned software, including de-signed commercial releases, and thus makes Symbian Signed actually of no use. One look at any warez site's download counters clearly shows that in its current (hacked) state Symbian Signed does NOT protect against anything, and actually only annoys developers (who still have to go through the certification, pay for it while not really getting the promised protection) and honest end users (who have to waste time on signing unsigned freeware using quite cumbersome Open Signed Online).
Blocking the OS hack for good is the only way to stimulate (now very poor) 3rd party software development. In order for more developers to get interested in creating valuable, commercial software for Symbian OS, Symbian Signed must finally guarantee that signed applications are REALLY protected against being un-signed in no time and freely installable on all hacked phones. Or else it only scares developers away involving procedures (and costs) that actually do not give anything in exchange.
Let's also hope that the Open Signed Online procedure (used mostly to sign unsigned freeware) also gets improved soon. Why not make it really online, i.e. directly on the phone, as part of the onboard Installer functionality? An attempt to install unsigned application could make the Installer (of course, after obtaining user's permition) contact the Open Signed server, submit required information (like phone IMEI, application details, etc.), get the certificate and sign it directly on the phone. Isn't this what we have 'always connected' devices for? Or is it too much to be desired at the end of the first decade of the 21st century? It would surely make Symbian Signed being considered a useful and friendly protection and not a hated restriction, and millions of people would lose reasons to hack their phones... |

Bluetooth 3.0 officially announced
|
From its annual All Hands Meeting in Tokyo this week, the Bluetooth SIG formally adopted Bluetooth Core Specification Version 3.0 High Speed (HS), or Bluetooth 3.0. This latest iteration of the popular short-range wireless technology fulfills the consumers' need for speed while providing the same wireless Bluetooth experience – faster. Manufacturers of consumer electronics and home entertainment devices can now build their products to send large amounts of video, music and photos between devices wirelessly at speeds consumers expect.
Bluetooth 3.0 gets its speed from the 802.11 radio protocol. The inclusion of the 802.11 Protocol Adaptation Layer (PAL) provides increased throughput of data transfers at the approximate rate of 24 Mbps. In addition, mobile devices including Bluetooth 3.0 will realize increased power savings due to enhanced power control built in.
This newest version of Bluetooth technology builds on the inherent qualities of the current 2.1 EDR version, including Simple Secure Pairing and built-in, automatic security. And as with all versions of the Bluetooth specification, Bluetooth 3.0 HS provides developers, manufacturers and consumers with the benefit of backwards compatibility, enabling both the expansion and enhancement of this technology with every new specification release. Once products reach the market, the easiest way for consumers to learn which devices are compatible with other Bluetooth enabled devices is to visit the Bluetooth Gadget Guide.
With the availability of Bluetooth version 3.0 HS, consumers can expect to move large data files of videos, music and photos between their own devices and the trusted devices of others, without the need for cables and wires. Some applications consumers will experience include:
* Wirelessly bulk synchronize music libraries between PC and music player or phone
* Bulk download photos to a printer or PC
* Send video files from camera or phone to computer or television
The Bluetooth SIG's formal adoption of the specification is only the first step in the product lifecycle. News out today from wireless chip manufacturers and Bluetooth SIG member companies Atheros, Broadcom, CSR, and Marvell shows the second step – getting silicon solutions to device manufacturers – is already underway. End products for consumers are expected to be in the market in 9 to 12 months.
This new specification release includes several major enhancements:
* Generic Alternate MAC/PHY (AMP)
* 802.11 Protocol Adaptation Layer (PAL)
* Generic Test Methodology
* Enhanced Power Control
* Unicast Connectionless Data

Sony Ericsson Idou announced
|
 Sony Ericsson has just unveiled a concept Symbian Foundation platform based phone called Idou. It's actually more than just a concept as it is said to become a real device, but at the moment it is in a very early stage so many things may change until then. Detailed information/specifications and release date will be announced later this year but the device is supposed to become available in the second half of 2009.
Idou is a part of The Entertainment Unlimited consumer proposition announced today at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Bringing together rich content, unique applications and best in class entertainment experiences, the new consumer proposition is based around three key promises:
* Uniting best in class entertainment experiences into one offering such as the Walkman music experience, the Cyber-shot imaging experience, Java gaming and messaging integrated with services and applications.
* Broadening entertainment experiences by seamlessly integrating the mobile phone into other devices in the home letting consumers share and enjoy top quality entertainment content through a variety of channels including TV, PC and Hifi systems.
* Fusing communication with entertainment by removing barriers and offering unlimited sharing opportunities, multiplying the value of people's entertainment experiences through a host of innovative web applications and Sony Ericsson's Play Now offering.
Capture moments, talk through pictures and share all your experiences like never before with the 12.1 megapixel camera, intuitive touch features and Xenon flash. Tap directly into your favourite videos and tracks with the full-touch media menu and feast your eyes on movies, TV-series and video clips in true 16:9 widescreen format ( 3.5" display). Based on what will become the Symbian Foundation operating system, thousands of applications are available online letting you install new applications and download exciting content from PlayNow to make the Idou truly yours.
The demo unit showcased in Barcelona was equipped with a very "introductory" development build of the OS so it's hard to speculate now how the final version will look like. Based on the first release of the Symbian Foundation platform, it will be a successor to the current S60 5th Edition. As a "Symbian Foundation Certified" device, it will be cross-compatible with all other Symbian Foundation based devices of other brands (e.g. Nokia or Samsung) and hopefully also with existing 3rd software that now works fine e.g. on the Nokia 5800. The UI of the Idou will follow Sony Ericsson's UI design, including e.g. the Media Bar, Walkman Player, icons and menu style known from other Sony Ericsson phones.

S60 Vulnerability - Remote SMS/MMS Denial of Service "Curse of Silence"
|
| The "CurseSMS" attack is a remote SMS/MMS denial of service, recently discovered by Tobias Engel, and disclosed at CCC. The attack consists in sending a maliciously crafted SMS to the potential target. Upon reception of the malicious SMS, the targeted device may no longer be able to receive any further SMS or MMS messages, its messaging system thereby effectively becoming deaf. Depending on the operating system version, this state may persist until the device is factory reset. Fortinet have released a tool called FortiCleanUp which effectively blocks and disables the remote SMS/MMS Denial of Service attack. |

The news is really exciting as the new models are going to include everything I've always dreamed about: HSDPA connectivity (which finally means access to the Internet everywhere), high-resolution camera and powerful OMAP3-based processor. My-Symbian's sister site devoted to Internet Tablets, My-Maemo.com, is still in the works, but the news is truly motivating so I'll be doing my best to assign more resources and efforts to prepare the site for its launch before or along with the introduction of the new models.
