Phone: Nokia 7710

Hello people,
I recently got a new mobile phone but I want to keep my 7710 as ebook reader, organizer etc.
Since it refuses to boot without sim card I would like to know if there is a way to use it without one?

Get some old, inactive SIM card and it'll be just fine.
If you can't find any such SIM, buy some cheap prepaid card, use up all the credit it has and then put it into the 7710 and keep it there Wink

Phone: Nokia 9500 Communicator

I usually use an old SIM card, which works fine. But, it won't have any signals, and in some phones, before the phone is started up, it will show "SIM Card Registration Fail".

If the cellphone can be set to flight mode (or Offline mode, which turns off the GSM part in Nokia S80 communicators), it will save a lot of battery (because the phone won't gain any signals because of the expired SIM card, but the phone will always try to get some signals with higher power which drains a lot of battery usage).

I bought three dummy SIM cards from eBay at some few dollars, and they work fine on the 7710. The battery is drained faster, just like MatthewBrian said, but I never realized I could use the flight mode Shocked Now I set the profile to "Flight", and I'll see how the battery reacts to that. I have another phone with a dummy card as well, Nokia 6680, and I set its profile to "Offline", which is the equivalent for the flight mode, if I've understood correctly.

One more note: The "dummy simcards" Sera said in the previous post is the "blank" simcard (with real chip), but doesn't have any data inside (nor it contains any cellular information written by the operator). Dummy simcards which does not contain any chips - just plain SIMcard-shaped plastic (like what I've got when I bought a new Nokia CDMA cellphone for my mom) won't work, as the phone won't detect any simcards.

You're right, MatthewBrian. By the way, I found an even cheaper lot at DealExtreme.com which has the shipping costs included in the price.

Dummy SIM Cards for Cell Phone (3-pack) - $1.74

Update: Today was the first day I had to recharge my 7710 after I set the device to "Flight" mode. I did use Bluetooth transfer on the phone for an hour during this time, and I set it to "General" while doing that (so the GSM radio was set on). So it's been a good week and few days without recharging, and before MatthewBrian's advice I had to recharge it once in two days at least.
